Last Over Heroics - Part II

In the Part I of this analysis (Last over Heroics – Part I, dated on Nov 1, 2014), we have seen how well the batsmen fared in the last over of ODIs when stiff targets were to be achieved. Coming back to the Australia - Pakistan ODI at Abu Dhabi last month, we saw Glenn Maxwell bowling a maiden in the 50th over and thereby defending the runs he had in his kitty at the start of the over. In the process he became the second bowler in ODI history, after Chris Pringle on New Zealand, to bowl his side to victory with a maiden of the last over of the match. In this article we see how well the bowlers fared when they had too little with them to defend.

Maxwell : Held his nerve while Pak batsmen chocked under pressure

* Aus have defended less than 10 runs off the last over maximum times -15. The team at the receiving end was also Aus along with Eng and WI with 8 times each.

* Shane Watson is the only bowlers to succesfully defend 10 or fewer runs in the last over thrice.  Kapil Dev,Merv Hughes, Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Cairns, Damien Fleming and Kevin O’Brein did it twice each.

* Chris Pringle & Glenn Maxwell are the only ones to bowl a maiden. Incidentally both had just 2 runs to defend.

* In the Ind - Aus ODI at Chennai on 9-Oct-87, a four hit by Dean Jones in the 1st innings was changed to a six during mid-innings which in the end became the deciding factor.

* In the Ire – Neth ODI at Belfast, with 6 still needed from 3 balls, shockingly Geert-Maarteen-Mol shouldered arms to the 4th ball by Kevin O’Brein.

* Charl Langeveldt took a hat trick - Ian Bradshaw, Darren Powell, Corey Colleymore being the victims.

* The Aus - NZ ODI at Indore on 19-Oct-87, the match was a 30 over contest played on the reserve day.

* The SA - WI ODI at Cape Town on 09-Feb-03 was the opening match of 2003 World Cup. One over was deducted from SA's innings for slow over rate.

* In the NZ -WI ODI at Georgetown on 03-Apr-96, Man of the match was awarded to the entire NZ team.

The man with the golden arm - Sachin Tendulkar

*Abdul Razzaq cleaned up Chamara Silva off the 1st ball of the 50th over thereby tying the match.  SL collapsed from 157/1 to 196 all out.

* The Aus - WI ODI at George town on 21-Apr-99 was 30 overs a side match. A pitch invasion happened off the last ball .Match referee Subba Row declared the match ended in a tie. A similar incident happened at the same venue 6 years earlier in another tied ODI bw Pak & WI. Subba Row was the match referee in that game too.

* The Aus - SA ODI at Edgbaston on17-Jun-99 was the semi final of the World Cup. Aus progressed to the final by virtue of their Super Six win against the same opposition and went on to win the cup.

* 680 runs scored in the match bw Eng & NZ at Napier on 20-Feb-08 is the highest aggregate in a tied ODI.

The mother of all mix ups : Aus vs SA semi final, WC 99
